Aberdeen City Council
Client: Aberdeen City Council
The Problem
Located adjacent to the River Dee, the underpass in Aberdeen provides access to local businesses and residential properties. Following previous flooding incidents, the council needed a solution to prevent future flooding.
The environment posed challenges, including space constraints and the need for safe operation, making a standard solution unsuitable.
The Solution
It was decided that a bespoke One Man Operational Floodgate would provide the best protection. The 4m x 5m gate was designed to hold open at 120 degrees, with bespoke posts ensuring safe clearance between the gate leaf and the bridge wing to prevent entrapment.
A drainage channel was installed and connected to multiple sump and pump units to discharge water back onto the river side of the gate. A bespoke connection cabinet was manufactured and installed above flood level to house the power supply for the pump generator.
Upon completion, the gates were water tested up to 600mm using the council’s water bowsers, and the pumps were tested to ensure the system efficiently discharged water.
