The Problem
Maintaining the UK rail network and keeping tracks free of weeds requires specialist trains equipped with GPS tracking and herbicide spraying systems. Each train can carry up to 10,000 litres of chemicals, making safe storage and spill containment critical.
The trains’ innovative GPS system automatically shuts off spray nozzles when crossing bridges, watercourses, or when stationary, but there remained a significant risk of spillage during operation. The wagons are designed to flex in all directions while moving, complicating the ability to maintain effective watertight seals.
The Solution
Bayer engaged M3 Floodtec to design and install bespoke flood containment systems for all three specialist trains.
The solution included:
- Flood containment around access roller shutter doors on either side of the wagons
- Sealed access ways into and out of the carriages
- Custom-designed flood seals capable of flexing with the wagons’ movements
Water testing confirmed that the system effectively retained and secured all liquids inside the spray units, ensuring safe operation and protecting both personnel and the environment from accidental spillage.
