Elland Wharf, Yorkshire
Client: Elland Wharf
The Problem
Located on a narrow strip of land between the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation, Elland Wharf dates back over 200 years and comprises a series of Grade II listed buildings. Originally constructed as stone warehouses and canal housing, the properties have since been converted into contemporary office and retail spaces.
Situated in the Calder Valley, the site is highly susceptible to flooding from both the river and canal, with three major flood events impacting the properties over the past decade. The challenge was to implement a comprehensive flood protection solution while preserving the historic character and listed status of the buildings.
The Solution
M3 Floodtec designed and installed a complete flood protection scheme across all buildings, achieving a protection level of up to 900mm while maintaining the architectural integrity of the site.
The solution included new hardwood entrance screens, flood doors, flood-resistant windows, and internal composite flood doors. The entrance screens were manufactured from Accoya, a low-maintenance, FSC®-certified sustainable timber chosen for its durability and minimal environmental impact.
High-level opening casements were incorporated into sash-style windows, carefully designed to replicate the original 1820s units and preserve the historic appearance of the buildings.
Works were completed in November 2020.
