Flood Retaining Walls
Client: Various
The Problem
Hundreds of industrial units built in the early 20th century are still in use, but at the time flood protection was never considered. Increased hard surfacing from progressive urban development, along with rising flows in water courses, is now placing these industrial units at a high risk of surface water and fluvial flooding.
Many older industrial units were constructed close to rivers, streams and estuaries and are typically faced with traditional steel cladding. As water levels rise, the cladding is unable to retain external water and, consequently, internal flooding is frequently experienced, causing significant disruption to plant, machinery and stored stock.
The Solution
The installation of reinforced concrete, block or brick flood walls, constructed either internally or externally to the building envelope, can act as a retaining barrier against flood water. When combined with flood doors or deployable barrier systems, these measures can effectively protect the property from flood risk and help to reduce insurance premiums.
