Merrythought Village, Ironbridge
Client: Merrythought Village
The Problem
Dating back to the turn of the 19th century, Merrythought Village comprises renovated bespoke retail workshops and is home to the last teddy bear manufacturers in the UK.
Situated at the northern end of the Wharfage in Ironbridge Gorge, the site is prone to flooding from the River Severn, which borders the property and frequently features in media coverage during flood events. Protecting the village required careful consideration of the heritage status of the buildings and the variety of uses across the site.
The Solution
A combination of passive and deployable flood technologies was deployed to safeguard the village while respecting the heritage and operational requirements of each building.
The solution included:
- External and internal sump and pump systems
- Deployable barriers and stop log barriers
- Defender walls
- Non-return valves
- Puddle pumps
This integrated approach provided comprehensive protection against flood inundation while maintaining the functionality and character of the site.
