Lidl, Oban, Scotland
Client: Dickie & Moore
The Problem
Oban experienced flooding in December 2013 and again in October 2014. The area near the store site is prone to flooding during extreme high tides, large fluvial events, or sewer backups. As a result, the new Lidl store building was identified as requiring flood mitigation measures.
The Solution
The main contractors, Dickie & Moore, specified Flood Defender Barriers as the ideal solution to provide protection for the store. The barriers are lightweight yet strong, allowing quick and easy installation during flood events.
Key features:
- Suitable for use in listed buildings
- Can be retrofitted or used in new builds
- Made from recycled polypropylene
- Air-permeable, complying with BS493:1995
- Easy to install
- Integrated mesh prevents insects and debris entering
In total, 11 Flood Defender Barriers and 1 Flood Defender Wall were installed, protecting the shop front, store and utility entrances, and the vehicular delivery area. Rails for the barriers were fixed into proton block using chemical anchor sleeves.
The Flood Defender Wall, used to protect the delivery entrance, can span any width using the barriers with a series of demountable posts.
Installation was completed in September 2016, and the store opened at the end of that year.
