Longden Coleman, Shrewsbury
The Problem
Dating back to the mid-1700s and running alongside the River Severn, Longden Coleman is a key transport route into central Shrewsbury via the English Bridge.
Its proximity to the river has made the area prone to flooding, causing considerable damage and disruption to a mix of private dwellings and small commercial retail outlets. Following the 2020 flood events, several property owners along the road sought proactive flood defence solutions.
The Solution
Works commenced in June 2021, with a tailored flood protection approach designed to suit the age, structural condition, and non-adjoining nature of the properties.
The solution combined:
- Flood barriers and polymer tanking to prevent the majority of water ingress
- Sump and pump systems to manage any residual water
This integrated approach proved highly effective, with no property loss or damage reported during the December 2021 and February 2022 floods. Businesses were able to resume operations within hours of floodwaters receding.
